SUMMARY:Healing with Joy and Psychedelic Strangeness: Oli Genn-Bash
DESCRIPTION:October 1st @7PM \nMany people have experienced comical moments within their own personal psychedelic experiences; funny situations\, in-jokes\, or novel occurrences\, often due to the strangeness of the experience itself compared to the ordinary waking state of consciousness. We may enter into a mindset or even a world that is so odd or weird that the most pragmatic response is to accept the weirdness and laugh right back at it. This is something which can be often overlooked to when focusing on the nature of the psychedelic experience. Instead the focus seems to lie within other realms such as spirituality\, mysticism\, religion\, philosophy\, medicine\, or healing. The moments of laughter or joy that one may experience don’t become necessarily a focal point – possibly because one feels that there is more to this experience than just fun. Or even further it is that this kind of experience should be taken very seriously as to acquire some form of learning which requires full attention.  laughter serves a very serious function in these moments which we may not entirely be conscious of within the moment itself; it is the notion that we must not take life too seriously – and I stress this in a very serious manner. Much like the Zen Buddhists who utilise Koans to shake one’s mindset out of ordinary thought patterns\, laughter can be utilised in a similar fashion of allowing us to break out of the ordinary and experience ekstasis or a ‘stepping-out’.\nIt is a reminder that our fixed notions of what is happening may not always necessarily be accurate and that we may not have as much control over situations as we usually feel like we do within ordinary states of consciousness. Moments of laughter within psychedelic experience when viewed within this manner allows us more freedom\, and an ultimate release from worry when things surprise us. The ability to laugh at ourselves and the universe can serve as a tool to allow for personal and spiritual growth along with a sense maturity\, along with the ability to potentially work with the darker and more unpleasant sides to life. The effect of laughter coupled with the effects of a psychedelic experience may endow one with a sense of portentousness\, leading to a revelatory notion that one is supposed to experience joy and can ultimately be liberated. \nOli Genn-Bash is co-founder of the University of Kent Canterbury Psychedelics Society and UK Psychedelic Comedy. He has previously helped to organise talks in London as part of the Psychedelia Railway Gatherings along with a series of talks in Kent through the Psychoactive Hub. Oli’s postgraduate research has primarily been within the field of politics\, philosophy and mysticism\, with a specific focus on stand-up comedy as a practice of resistance and how psychedelic substances have played a role in the work of comedians such as Bill Hicks. In his spare time Oli enjoys making experimental ambient drone music as part of a duo and talking about the wonders of cannabis. \n
