Patients have been used as pawns on the battlefield for cannabis legalisation for too long. After suffering the fear of and actual criminalisation up until 2018, patients now feel like victims of a corporate oligopoly whereby if they don’t pay the man you go back to square one, or worse, you get arrested. It’s time they were legally able to grow their own cannabis.

There’s a lot of logic in allowing people who have been recognised as genuine patients by a genuine doctor to use cannabis to grow their own if they so wish. You can even require patients to have regular check-ups with their doctor still to monitor their health.
Politicians would be doing good by their medical cannabis constituents to listen to how growing at home positively impacts overall well-being. Part of a well functioning medical system is listening to patient voices. Unfortunately, medical staff are unable to change the law, so we require a multi-stakeholder approach if we are truly going to solve people’s very real problems and create the better society we are always talking about.
The cost of medical cannabis is one of the driving factors to the slow and low uptake by UK citizens who know they qualify for a prescription. This in turn is slowing down the main goal of medical cannabis legalisation – to transition patients away from using contaminated cannabis produced by and profiting organised crime gangs.
In a cost of living crisis, patients need to save money. Allowing them to grow their own would give them the amount of cannabis they need in many cases, with the consequence being another overall goal, improved heath and more functioning members of society that are less of a burden on the state.
Patients have been self titrating cannabis as medicine for centuries, and the last 30 years has seen an abundance of information sharing that has allowed patients to help each other in ways that doctors are simply unable to because they lack the experience of actually living with these conditions or using cannabis themselves.

It would be really incredible for the new government to have to debate this topic. We have had cannabis petitions reach over 100k before, so anything is possible – you just have to be part of something.
For those of you who say “well, I’m not medical, so I am not signing it because it doesn’t include me” please lighten up, care about your fellow human and see it as another step towards people thinking rationally. It doesn’t stop us from continuing to campaign for wider legalisation, but we will take the progress if we can.
Cannabis Social Clubs have been providing a save haven for patients who are unable to access medical cannabis or are unable or too worried to grow their own. Find out more about the UKCSC and our work.
